How Much Does a Vending Machine Weigh? Weights by Machine Type

Quick answer: most full-size vending machines weigh about 450 to 850 lb empty. Across the 74 new machines in our catalog with a listed weight, the lightest weighs 190 lb and the heaviest 831 lb, with a typical (median) machine at 574 lb. Countertop machines and small AI smart coolers weigh far less; refrigerated combo, drink and outdoor machines weigh the most. A loaded machine weighs more again, and the crate and pallet add to the shipping weight.

Why vending machines are so heavy

  • Steel cabinet and door. Commercial cabinets are built from heavy-gauge steel to resist tipping, theft and vandalism. Outdoor and high-security models add thicker steel and reinforced doors.
  • Refrigeration deck. The compressor, condenser and evaporator in drink, combo and food machines add weight that ambient snack machines do not carry.
  • Glass fronts. Glass-front machines use thick tempered or insulated glass.
  • Delivery systems. Elevators, stack columns and many spiral motors all add weight.
  • Stock. A full drink machine carries hundreds of cans or bottles; a full snack machine carries far less.

Floor load and placement

A standard commercial floor carries a vending machine without trouble, but the weight is concentrated on four leveling legs. On raised floors, older wooden floors, mezzanines or soft surfaces, ask the building owner or an engineer, and use floor protectors or a plate to spread the load. Outdoors, stand the machine on a level concrete pad. Wall anchoring kits reduce the risk of a machine tipping if someone rocks it; many manufacturers include or recommend them.

Moving a vending machine safely

  • Empty it first. Remove products and, on refrigerated machines, leave it upright afterwards before switching on, as the manufacturer instructs.
  • Use the right equipment: an appliance dolly or pallet jack rated well above the machine’s weight, straps, and at least two people.
  • Keep it upright or follow the manufacturer’s tilt limits; laying a refrigerated machine flat can damage the compressor.
  • Measure the route. Doorways, corridors, turns, elevators and steps must clear the machine’s width and depth; see vending machine dimensions.
  • Consider a mover for stairs or long carries. For delivery and setup, see vending machine installation and freight delivery.
